If you don’t know who Meryl Streep is, you have probably been living under a rock for the past couple of decades. One of the very best that Hollywood has seen, she’s been nominated for an Oscar 21 times over the years and she’s also won three. Besides her popularity as an actress, she is always sure that her supportive spouse, Don Gummer, has her back.
Till he succumbed to lung cancer in 1978, Meryl Streep dated John Cazale. She loved him deeply and in the documentary ‘Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep’, director Joe Papp testifies to the commitment and intensity she displayed as she cared for him through his illness.
His death took a heavy toll on her and at the time, she found a pillar of support in Cazale’s longtime friend Don Gummer. While working on Kramer Vs. Kramer, a then barely thirty-year-old Streep moved in with Gummer.
The movie Kramer Vs. Kramer won her the first of her three Oscars. Half a year after Cazale had died, Streep and Gummer’s wedding took place in the September of 1978. Their relationship was doubted by many, not even excepting Meryl’s own mom but both of them were sure of what they wanted and they are going strong even to this day. Through four decades and four children, they have loved and supported each other.
Let’s rewind to some of their best times together:
